MATERNITY

What kind of bra should I wear while breastfeeding?

Wear a comfortable and supportive nursing bra while breastfeeding. Nursing bras have clasps or panels that allow easy access for feeding. Avoid hard and rigid underwire bras as your breasts tend to change size and shape a lot as milk is produced and removed. Underwires can cause blockages in the breast ducts when you are breast feeding, and lead to mastitis. Look for the following features:

  • Soft and flexible nursing bras that have extended eye clips and hooks and are detachable to allow easy feeding. Check out these maternity bras.
  • Stretch fabric, as your breasts will change shape and size a lot throughout breast feeding. Try these ones.
  • Nursing bra straps are secured by clips or magnets, making breastfeeding easy and convenient. Open and close the bra cups when trying them on, to find the style that is easiest for you to manage.
  • The whole cup should fold away, to ensure that there would be no pressure on a full breast whilst feeding.
  • Built-in pockets that allow you to wear nursing pads.

What kind of bra should I wear when pregnant?

You should wear a maternity bra, like this one. Your breasts will undergo significant change, especially in the first trimester of pregnancy. They will become larger, and more sensitive to touch. Your rib cage will also start to expand, and your mammary glands will be preparing to make milk for your baby. Therefore, your breasts will need comfortable support.

Once your bra becomes tight, or your breasts begin to spill out of their cups, you will want to purchase a new maternity bra. Look for maternity bras that have:

  • wider straps
  • soft cotton lining
  • extra hooks and eyes on the bands
  • no rigid underwires
  • soft stretch fabric, especially around the top part of the cup to accommodate fluctuations in size
  • smooth seamlines, or seamless

When should you buy a maternity bra?

As soon as you start to outgrow your normal bra. This time frame varies from woman to woman, however most changes to breast size and shape will occur during the first trimester. You might like to start with seamless maternity bras to accommodate for rapid growth throughout the first trimester, and then be re-fitted once growth stabilises. You should buy a maternity bra as soon as:

  • Your normal bras become too tight
  • Your breasts begin to spill out of their cups
  • Your bra is leaving any red marks or indentations on your skin.

Your breasts are increasing in size as they are preparing to produce milk for your baby. Therefore, they need a lot of support to keep you comfortable, prevent back and shoulder pain, and to prevent damage or sagging.

What is a maternity bra?

Maternity bras are designed to be worn during your pregnancy. Women find that their breasts can increase up to three sizes during their pregnancy. Therefore, maternity bras have:

  • wider straps
  • soft cotton lining
  • extra hooks and eyes on the bands
  • no rigid underwires
  • soft stretch fabric, especially around the top part of the cup to accommodate fluctuations in size
  • smooth seamlines, or seamless

These features give your growing breasts the comfort and support you need. It is essential to wear highly supportive maternity bras to prevent shoulder pain, back pain, damage and sagging during your pregnancy.

Do I need a maternity bra?

Yes. Your breasts need extra support throughout your pregnancy, as they are preparing to produce breast milk for your baby. They can increase up to three bra sizes and will become heavier and more sensitive, as your mammary glands prepare to produce milk. Your rib cage will also expand as your baby grows.

Maternity bras are specially constructed and designed for:

  • Maximum support
  • Good coverage
  • Comfort

Maternity bras will stretch as your breasts go through a rapid growth phase and your body changes. It can be tempting to make do with bras you already have throughout your pregnancy, or to simply buy a bra a few sizes up. However, investing in some good maternity bras is essential, as they will prevent shoulder pain, back pain, damage and sagging throughout your pregnancy. They will also stop you needing to adjust your bra straps throughout the day.

How much does a maternity bra cost?

A good maternity bra will cost between $45 - $75. They are well worth the investment, so that you will be comfortable and supported throughout your pregnancy. They will also minimise tissue damage and sagging.

  • You will need to purchase maternity bra’s in your first trimester, and potentially again in the final weeks.
  • You might like to purchase a nursing bra in the final weeks, which has openings that allow you to feed your baby. You will be able to continue to use it when the baby arrives.
  • Also purchase at least 3 maternity bras to wear at a time whilst pregnant, so that you can maintain laundering, health and hygiene. Consider purchasing both black and nude options to suit different outfits.

How to size a nursing bra?

Consider seeking out a professional bra fitter at your closest store or contacting our online support team to ensure the right fit.

Sizing Tips:

  • Band Size: Measure around your body, just under the arms with a measuring tape. Round uneven numbers up.
  • Cup Size: Measure around the fullest part of your bust with a measuring tape.
  • Ensure the measuring tape sits flat and is level all around your body

A Good Fit:

  • The cup covers your breast
  • The band is level all the way around
  • There is no spillage
  • There is no riding up.

Ensuring Comfort

  • Open and close the bra cups when trying them on, to find the style that is easiest for you to manage.
  • Look for nursing bras where the whole cup folds away and ensure that there would be no pressure on a full breast whilst feeding.

SPORTS

How to tell if a sports bra fits?

A well fitted sports bra is firm, but not too tight.

  • Band is snug around your rib cage
  • You can fit two fingers between your body and the band
  • Shoulder straps are secure
  • Minimal stretch
  • Minimal up and down movement
  • Band does not ride up at the back
  • Straps do not dig into your skin or cause pain
  • Breasts are not spilling out of the cups
  • Breasts are separated and air can circulate
  • Underwire should sit flat against rib cage, below the breast tissue
  • Underwire should not pinch or poke

A well fitted sports bra will ensure that your breasts do not hurt after a workout. It will also prevent any tissue damage from the higher impact movement of a workout.

How to choose a good sports bra?

A good sports bra offers support and comfort throughout a workout. Your breasts should never hurt during a workout. If they are hurting, your sports bra could be allowing soft tissue damage. A good sports bra will have the following features:

  • Wide bands that give more support.
  • Secure shoulder straps with minimal stretch.
  • Wider shoulder straps disperse more weight and offer greater comfort
  • Straps do not slip off the shoulders
  • Adjustable straps for a customisable fit
  • Sports bras with back closures are easier to get on and off and allow you to further adjust your fit.
  • Underwire offers support for each breast individually.
  • Moisture wicking fabric, to keep your skin comfortable.

Ensure that the level of support offered by your sports bra is suited to your activity and movement. You will wear a different sports bra for yoga, than you would for running.

How tight should a sports bra be?

You should be able to fit two fingers between your body and the band of a well fitted sports bra. No more, no less.

Sports bras should be firm, but never too tight. They should give you comfort and support throughout your workout, but never cause pain. Finding the right balance can be tricky. So here are a few other points to look out for when getting the right fit:

  • The band should be snug not tight
  • The straps are secure, and don’t allow bounce.
  • The straps should never dig in or cause pain
  • Your breasts should not be spilling out of the cups

What is the best sports bra for running?

You will need a high support/impact sports bra for running. Running is a high intensity exercise, movement and bounce needs to be minimised.

You will want to look for high impact bras with the following features:

  • Wide bands: The band around your chest offers the most support. It should be thick and firm, similar to these bras.
  • Wide straps: Wider shoulder straps disperse more weight. Cross over straps also provide more support. Try this sports bra.
  • Compression and encapsulation: High impact sports bras reduce movement through both compression and encapsulation. They compress the breasts against the chest wall to restrict movement and have individual cups to surround and support each breast separately.
  • Adjustable straps: So that you can customise and adjust your fit for extra comfort and support. Check this bra out.

What type of sports bra is best for large breasts?

High support bras with extra coverage.

Large breasts are prone to more bounce, movement and spillage throughout a workout.

Therefore, you should look for the following features:

  • A combination of compression and encapsulation support. Compression reduces bounce by pushing the breasts against the breast wall, whilst encapsulation use individual cups to surround and support each breast separately. Encapsulation cups prevent the “mono-boob” and allow air circulation. Try these bras.
  • Wide straps to disperse and hold more weight.
  • Wide bands that fit firmly around your chest
  • Adjustable straps which can be tightened for high impact activities, and as the bra ages.
  • Back closures with extra hooks for adjustability and a customised fit.
  • Underwires for extra support. Try this underwire sports bra.

Can you wear a sports bra while pregnant?

It is unlikely that you will be able to wear the same sports bras during your pregnancy. Your bust will increase in size and change shape a lot throughout pregnancy and nursing. They will also become heavier and more sensitive. You should always ensure that you are comfortable, well fitted and supported.

Look for the following features in a high-quality maternity sports bra:

  • Flexi-wire or wire free: This allows your bra to change shape with your breasts, and prevents discomfort.
  • If you choose underwire, ensure that it does not sit anywhere near your breast tissue.
  • Premium compression fabric
  • Soft lining
  • Easy drop down feeding clips
  • Adjustable straps for optimal fit and movement.
  • Built in cups that can be worn with nursing pads
  • Flat or soft seams that are chafe resistant

Is it bad to sleep in a sports bra?

Wearing a sports bra to bed will not prevent your breasts from sagging. However, some women may choose to do so because a little bit of support overnight makes them more comfortable. Sports bras may also be a more comfortable sleeping choice than underwire bras.

If you do choose to sleep in a sports bra or soft-shape bra, ensure that it has the following features to keep you comfortable over night:

  • Avoid strong underwires as they can cause irritation.
  • Avoid too much compression as these can cause reduced circulation, overheating, or sweating.
  • Avoid synthetic fabrics that can make you sweat. Choose breathable, soft natural fabrics, such as cotton.

How to properly wear a sports bra?

Slip your arms through the arm holes when putting it your sports bra on. You should always place the backband on the loosest hook when you first start wearing the bra. You then start using the tighter hooks as the sports bra ages.

Also ensure to wear the right bra for the type of exercise you are doing. If you are running, wear a high impact, high compression bra. If you are doing yoga, or reformer Pilates, you can wear a low-impact bra.

Never wear your sports bra past its expiry date. If you are wearing a sports bra once per week, and take care of it well, it can last you about one year. Once your bra elastic starts wearing out, it will start riding up your back and your breasts will sag or bounce.

What makes a good sports bra?

A good sports bra is well designed, and highly supportive. The level of support it provides is well matched to the activity level you will be using it for.

Your sports bra also provides greater support from the front and sides, while a reinforced underband keeps it in place.

Good sports bras will minimise movement with the following features:

  • Broader cup coverage to reduce stress on your breast tissue and offer support from the front and sides.
  • Adjustable straps which allow you to customise your fit for comfort and support.
  • A thick, reinforced underband around the chest. Surprisingly the lower band is where 70% of the bra’s support comes from. Check this supportive sports bra out.
  • Wide, firm shoulder straps which do not slide off your shoulders throughout your workout. Thicker straps will distribute weight more evenly.
  • Back clasps that allow you to tighten the band for a firmer fit.
  • Lining for comfort.

How to measure for a sports bra?

Measuring and fitting your bra size correctly, helps to ensure you have the right support, fit and shape.

Underbust: Measure around the body, directly below the bust. This measurement will help you to determine your band size.

Overbust: Measure across the fullest part of the breast. This measurement will help you to determine your cup size.

When using the measuring tape, ensure that it sits firmly, flat and straight around your body.

If you need more help, check out our sizing chart or find a store and get fitted.

UNDERWIRE

Where should the underwire of a bra sit?

The underwire and bra cups create the secondary support area for your bra. The underwire and bra cups should encompass your bust, give you the desired shape, ideal projection and lift.

Your entire breast tissue should sit in front of the wire. Every woman also has one breast that is slightly larger than the other. You should always fit for the larger breast and tighten the strap a little more on the smaller breast.

You can check the underwire fit as follows:

  • With your right hand, hold your bra’s side wing (under your right armpit) and gently pull it away from your body.
  • Now, put your left hand inside your right bra cup and adjust your breast toward your bra’s center panel.
  • Release the side wing when done and repeat the process for your left breast.
  • If your breasts are slightly bulging over the cups, go up a cup size. However, if they are spilling out the top of their cups go up 2 cup sizes up and repeat the process.

STRAPLESS BRA

What is a strapless bra?

A strapless bra is an underwire bra with wide sides and no straps (or removable straps). Strapless bras are great for tops and dresses that have thin or no straps. Special design features provide support via your underbust, such as boning, and silicone or wide elastic to keep it in place. Removable straps allow you to wear the bra with or without straps, for more styling options.

They are very useful to have in your wardrobe to wear with off-the-shoulder tops, racerbacks and slinky dresses. They also come in handy for weddings and formal occasions.

What bra do you wear with a strapless dress?

Strapless bras are great for tops and dresses that have thin or no straps. They are fantastic to have in your wardrobe for the summer months when you are wearing more revealing styles, or for formal occasions and weddings.

How to find a good strapless bra?

A good strapless bra needs to be supportive and give you your desired shape. It should provide comfort and lift with extra support via the underbust, such as boning, silicone and wide elastic. Try these options for strapless support.

There are many different strapless styles, that can be worn with different outfits and occasions. For example, there are stick on strapless bras, which can be worn with backless outfits. Some strapless bras will also come with detachable straps, so you can also wear them with everyday outfits. You can also purchase deep plunge strapless bras with very low necklines. Lace options also add a touch of femininity and function.

How to find a strapless bra that fits?

If a strapless bra is too big, you will find yourself pulling it up all night. If it is too tight, the silicone line sides and boning will dig into your sides. Using the following fitting tips to find the right fit:

  • The band should be snug. You should be able to fit two fingers under the band. No more, no less to ensure it is firm, but not too tight.
  • Look for separation and lift. Ensure there is no breast or back spillage.
  • Ensure that the band is not too narrow. The wider your chest, the wider the band should be. This ensures that the bra will support the weight of your bust.
  • Ensure that the bra sits firmly, when you fit it on the loosest back clips upon purchase. As the bra ages, you can then start close it on the tighter hooks to maintain support.

BRALETTE

What is a Bralette?

A bralette (aka soft-cup bra) is wire-free and provides comfort (and very slight support) under your bust, using a fabric or elastic band. Bralettes are dainty, unstructured and have minimal padding. They are often designed with lace, and lightweight, soft fabric. Bralette’s can be worn whenever you’re feeling at your most seductive or are looking for comfort. They are trendy, casual, and show off your natural shape. They come in beautiful range of colours and soft details. They are also a great night time option for women who prefer to sleep in a bra.

How to wear a Bralette

Bralettes are wire-free and provide very light support under your bust, using fabric or an elastic band. Bralettes are sexy, soft, casual and show off your natural shape. There are many ways to wear them.

  • Wear under a loose tank top or a sheer shirt. Show off some skin and a pretty bra, rather than your regular bra.
  • Wear them to bed, or for a comfortable movie night option.
  • Wear under a loose knit or sweater, so the lace peaks out when it slips off your shoulder.
  • Wear with a kimono and high waisted bottoms for a sexy festival look.
  • Wear layered under a soft cardigan, chambray or checkered shirt.
  • Wear with backless or off the shoulder dresses.

What is the difference between a bra and a Bralette?

Bralettes are wire free. They are comfortable, unstructured and provide light support. They are made from soft, delicate and lacy fabrics. They also come in sizes like small, medium and large, rather than with band and cup sizing. On the other hand, bras normally have underwires, structured cups, greater coverage and heavier support.

Regular bras provide more shape, lift and support. Bralettes are more casual, seductive, and show off your bust’s natural shape. They are a fashionable, and trendy option. They are particularly appealing for women with smaller bust sizes, who do not need as much support.

Can you wear a Bralette as a bra?

Yes. Women with smaller bust sizes will find this an appealing option. Bralettes are popular as a comfortable, casual and sexy bra option for day and nighttime. However, women with larger busts may not get enough support from a bralette for every day wear. Women with larger busts will need to look for bralettes with thicker underbust bands and wider shoulder straps.

Do you wear a bra with a Bralette?

No. Bralettes are often sheer and have minimal coverage. Therefore, a regular bra will be visible underneath a bralette.

If you are looking for a pretty bralette look but need more support, you would be better off to wear a regular bra with soft fabric and lacy details.
